Stephen Harvard was a “man of letters” literally. In the early ’90s I worked for a craft printing press (The Stinehour Press) in Lunenburg VT. We printed “book art” type books and books for gallery and museum exhibitions (like the Robert Mapplethorpe book for one of his shows). The quality was incredible and they were beautiful. Harvard was with Stinehour when he was sorta discovered by Rocky Stinehour, who also had a passionate love for type design and calligraphy. Rocky brought Stephen in to the operation, and Stinehour printed a lot of Stephen’s work. I started working at Stinehour about six months after Stephen Harvard committed suicide. It’s so sad. But the beauty of his letters had a MAJOR impact on my work. He would do simple alphabet structures, both on paper and in stone, granite, marble, etc. So my painting is a tribute to this great, almost unknown artist
